Algonquin College Self- Isolation Plan for International Students

Self-Isolation Plan

Algonquin College’s Readiness Plan (self isolation program) has been approved and current students not already in Canada, who have a study permit approval, may now make plans to travel.

Please note the following recent updates regarding travel to Canada

The Government of Canada has announced that as of February 22, 2021, travellers will be required to:

  1. Submit their travel and contact information, including a suitable quarantine plan, electronically via ArriveCAN before boarding a flight to Canada;
  2. Provide proof of a negative COVID-19 molecular test taken within 72 hours before their scheduled departure time;
  3. Take an additional COVID-19 molecular test on arrival in Canada, at their own cost;
  4. Stay in a government approved hotel for 3 nights at their port of entry (Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Vancouver) while they await the results of the COVID-19 molecular test they received on arrival;
  5. Pay for their hotel, as well as all associated costs for food, cleaning, transportation to hotel and security.

Upon receipt of a negative test result, students will then be permitted to continue on to Ottawa to complete their mandatory 14-day quarantine. Should a student test positive they will need to complete their self-isolation period at their arrival location, as instructed by the Government, and cover any associated costs.

A full list of hotels for the initial 3-night stay can be found here and must be booked prior to your travel to Canada. The cost of the hotel for the 3 nights upon arrival, including associated transportation, testing, food costs etc. are the responsibility of the student.

To reduce the total cost of the quarantine period, for students using the Algonquin College Self-isolation Plan (staying at the College approved hotel in Ottawa), Algonquin College will cover the costs of your remaining 11-day self-isolation hotel nights in Ottawa. Students will still be responsible to cover the cost of their food during their self-isolation period.

We ask all students with existing registered travel and self-isolation plans to submit new forms with your updated travel arrangements.

All flights to and from Mexico and Caribbean countries are suspended until April 30, 2021 as announced by the Government of Canada. This change is in effect as of January 31, 2021. We are asking students and agents to contact their airline and/or travel agent to see how their flights and travel plans may be impacted.

To make your transition a smooth one, we have provided all the resources you need to adhere to the quarantine regulations. Register your self-isolation plan or let us help you build one. Accommodations, groceries and travel resources, the Algonquin College Self-Isolation program has you covered.

Immigration Corner | What is an Authorisation to Return to Canada? : Dear Miss Powell, I used to live in Canada, but I was sent home. My cousin is getting married and I have an invitation to attend the wedding. Can I reapply for a visitor’s visa? What are the chances of my application being successful? Thank you Dear WW, A foreign national who has contravened the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) and its regulations can be the subject of a removal order from Canada and may need to apply for an Authorization to Return to Canada (ARC), and a Temporary Resident (visitor’s) visa. The success of your application depends on the reason that you were “sent home”, the type of removal order that was issued against you, the length of time that has passed, as well as your current social and economic situation. At the time of your departure from Canada, did you notify the Canadian Border Services Agency? Did they give you a letter confirming your departure? You should have received

Immigration Corner | Married to a Canadian, will they harass me? : Dear Miss Powell, I am married to a Canadian citizen. Before we were married, I had my visitor’s visa, so I was going back and forth, and he did the same. That works out good for both of us as we are very busy with our work, plus my husband says he... The immigration officer will not “harass” you because you are now married. However, you should expect to provide explanations about the reason for your visit and whether you are considering living or working in Canada. You should be honest with them as you could be barred from Canada for approximately five years for misrepresentation and have difficulties with future applications.

Canadian Citizenship as a Wife

Dear Ms Powell, I am engaged to someone in Canada. What are the requirements to get Canadian citizenship? Do I get citizenship automatically after marrying a Canadian citizen? What if our child is born outside of Canada will our baby get citizenship as well? We just need to know these things as we plan our future together. Thank you for your time. A.C. Dear AC, Congratulations on your engagement. You will not automatically get Canadian citizenship, just by marrying someone in Canada, but there a steps to acquiring same. The critical question is what is your fiancé’s legal status in Canada? Is he a visitor, student, worker, permanent resident, or Canadian citizen? If you get married to a permanent resident or Canadian citizen, you will not automatically get Canadian citizenship. However, there are steps that you can take to acquire Canadian citizenship.
