STEM Jobs Are In Demand In Canada

Dear Miss Powell, Happy holidays! I am in sixth form doing mostly science subjects and hoping to go to university next year. I am not sure what to study, but I’m doing some research about studying in Canada and came across your name, so I decided to write you. What are the kinds of jobs that are in demand since COVID? Are science jobs in demand? I know the prospects here are not so great, so I am looking for options in Canada as I would like to eventually live there. Hope that you will respond to me. Immigration Corner | Offered A Job In Canada

Dear Miss Powell, I got a job offer from a Canadian company and I wanted to update my express entry profile, but I keep getting asked about an 'LMIA'. What is that? How do I get one? I know that if I have a job offer then I would get all the points I need to get permanent residence. Do I really need one? - AR Dear AR, LMIA is an acronym for Labour Market Impact Assessment Report. This was previously called the Labour Market Opinion (LMO). Usually an employer is required to apply to Service Canada for permission to offer a legitimate job to someone who is outside of Canada. The permission is usually granted once the applicant employer can prove to the authorities that there is a genuine shortage of individuals in Canada who can fill the position. After the employer submits the completed application, supporting documents and fees, a report will be prepared to show the impact that hiring a foreign worker has on the current Canadian job market. Service Canada will ex...

Immigration Corner: I Want To Move To Canada

Dear Miss Powell, I am a professional and I would like my family to move to Canada. The problem is that I don't have a job offer. I have paid two companies to help me find a job and nothing. I feel like I'm wasting time and money now that the system has changed. Some of my friends did self-sponsorship under the old system and they are gone. I spoke to a consultant who said the only way I can get through is through a job offer or go to school. I have a master's degree, my husband has a bachelor's degree and we have two children and we are already qualified so school is not an option. Can you help us? Life in Jamaica has become unbearable and I want the best for my children. F.M.   Dear F.M., There are a number of ways you can immigrate to Canada without a job offer. Some of the ways may not apply to you, but I'm mentioning them for the benefit of other readers. You can immigrate to Canada under family sponsorship class, refugee and humanitarian programme...

How do I get back to Canada

Dear Ms Powell, I worked in Canada last year on a contract as a skilled labourer. I was hoping that my employer would rehire me this year and I could get a work permit. He however said he can't do so this year as the Canadian government is not allowing him to hire any more temporary foreign workers. He said if I come back he would be happy to hire me, but he is having a hard time and can't help me to get the work permit this year. How can I get to go back? - KE Dear KE, I sympathise with you and your former employer, as many temporary foreign workers (TFW) and employers alike are up in arms about the recent changes under the Canadian Temporary Foreign Worker Programme (TFWP). Most employers are limited to only 20% of their workers being temporary foreign workers especially in the food and accommodation sectors. That is because the government is focusing on reducing unemployment rate and ensuring that persons who are already in Canada can fill these positions.   Apply...

Job Hunting in Canada

Dear Ms. Powell, I have interviewed for a position as an IT specialist at a company in Canada. This will be a one year contract and I strongly believe I will get the job. I have a wife and a four-year-old child. I am not a permanent resident, however, I currently have a temporary resident visa. If I am successful, what will be my next step to get to Canada? Will my wife and child be able to come with me? Will my wife be able to work and my child able to go to school? - BS Congratulations on being able to secure a job interview. That is a strong testament as to your educational credentials, experience and skills. This means that several doors could now be opened to you to become a permanent resident in Canada, or depending on the time constraints you could simply apply for a work permit. Express Entry Route If you have a valid job offer, you can apply under the Express Entry System to become a permanent resident within six months. Under this system you are more flexible a...

Why so much money? - News - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | September 9, 2014

Why so much money? - News - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | September 9, 2014 Dear Ms. Powell, Iam currently working as an accountant and I am very much interested in migrating to Canada.  I started looking into it and I’m overwhelmed with the number of things they need and the amount of money I need to have in my bank account. Why would they want so much money? If I had that amount of money in my bank account I wouldn’t want to leave Jamaica!  Anyway, my mother keeps telling me that I will have a better life there and she would give me the money, if we can’t get around it.  I was talking with some friends who said that I shouldn’t worry too much about it now, as I can apply next year.  Most of them said they are waiting until then to submit their application, as they are saving up.  Is this true? Should I just wait until next year? Will the programme be available next year? Is there any way around the money part? ...
