Immigration Corner | Can I qualify if I work part-time?

BOOK A ZOOM CONSULTATION Dear Mrs Powell, I follow you on Facebook and I was hoping to see a post about my situation. Since I haven’t, I am writing to ask a few questions, and hope you will answer my question in  The Gleaner . I am a chartered accountant with three years experience. My husband is 35 years old and I’m 29. My husband and I are interested in living in Canada. He is an accountant as well. We are just wondering if we would qualify seeing that I don’t have a bachelor’s degree, like my husband. I am qualified through ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants). Does Canada recognise ACCA? Another issue is that I have two part-time jobs. Not a full-time job. Would that qualify me? I keep hearing that Canada has a backlog of applications. Is now a good time to apply? Please let us know if we have a chance of qualifying, as we would like to live in Canada and start a family there. CB Based on the information you provided, you could be a strong candidate unde...

How to avoid ‘choppas’? Choose a Canadian legal representative.

Protect yourself! Use a lawyer who is authorised to practice in Canada.  BOOK A ZOOM CONSULTATION No individual can guarantee you a card to live in Canada permanently. This is the prerogative of the Canadian government, which selects qualified individuals and grants them a confirmation of permanent residence. After an individual has landed in Canada, then he will be granted a permanent resident card. It is your duty to guard yourself from scammers, or ‘choppas’, by verifying that the person you are dealing with is authorised to represent you and your family. The Canadian government will only accept applications from lawyers and paralegals who are members in good standing with a Canadian provincial or territorial law society. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) also accepts applications from notaries who are members in good standing of the Chambre des notaires du Québec and consultants who are members in good standing of the College of Immigration and Citizenship Con...

IELTS EXAM IS KILLING ME

Dear Miss Powell, I am an accountant and I want to move to Canada to be with my family, but the IELTS exam is killing me. I have taken the exam four times and I can’t seem to get a good-enough grade to apply under the express entry programme. I am just horrible at doing exams. I do well enough in speaking, but can’t get over six for writing, listening, or reading. Is there any way I can become a permanent resident of Canada without sitting the exam? Someone said I should try the school route. What do you think? Can that work? Thank you for your help. – AO Dear AO,   Most of Canada’s immigration programmes require that you prove your competence in at least one of Canada’s official languages. For English, the required language exam is the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), General Training examination, or the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Programme (CELPIP) – General Examination. For French, you would need to sit the TEF Canada: Test d’évaluation de ...

What are my chances?

FIND OUT IF YOU QUALIFY TO COME TO CANADA    Dear Miss Powell, I have been a manager with a security company for over seven years. I have been contemplating migrating to Canada about two years now with my wife and son. What are my chances of getting through? What is the fastest way to get through? Is Canada still accepting applications? I want some help, but with all the scamming I don’t know who to trust. Any help you can give would be appreciated. A.B. Dear AB, Canada is still accepting applications from individuals worldwide via their website for the various immigration programmes. It is a wise move to apply now, as the government has been focusing on increasing the number of applications that it accepts over the next few months, to stay on target with it immigration goals for this year. Individuals, from time to time, ask what their chances are in being granted permanent residence in Canada. While I would love to help as many people as possible, I need more information tha...

Latest Canadian policy directives for international students

Dear Ms Powell, I   rely on your articles to help me with understanding Canada’s immigration rules. I now have an urgent matter. My son got through to study as an international student for a Canadian school. Due to corona, the government said that he could stay home and study online for up to six months. We were planning for him to go to Canada to finish up then out of the blue, no flights to Canada and more travel restrictions. We are already making a sacrifice for our son to have a better life in Canada, and we were advised that this was the best route. Now with these restrictions, we are wondering if he would qualify to live in Canada if he doesn’t get to finish up his studies and get Canadian work experience. What is my best course of action as nobody seems to be answering the phones at the embassy? I look forward to seeing my answer in The Gleaner. Thank you. – Concerned Mother Dear Concerned Mother, The government of Canada is constantly monitoring the pandemic, the si...

Options To Become A Canadian Citizen

Dear Ms Powell, I was doing some research online and came across your articles. I notice that you write mostly for people in Jamaica, but I wonder if you would still be able to help me although I am in the UK. I have lived in the UK for years but only on a work permit. I have a friend who lives in Canada, and he said he is now applying for his citizenship. Canada seems to be the best option for me and my family. When I researched, I saw so many programmes. I don’t know what the best option is. I’m highly skilled and my wife and I have degrees. I am confused. Please help. – A.N. Dear A.N., Thank you for your email. I enjoy hearing from my readers around the world. Although the articles are published in  The   Jamaica Gleaner , the policies and programmes are applicable to individuals in other countries except where I highlight that it is specifically for a particular country. CITIZENSHIP APPLICATION Canada has several routes to becoming a permanent resident and then beco...
