Maintaining Status in Canada.

BOOK A TELEPHONE MEETING  Foreign nationals who are in Canada are required to always maintain status when they are in Canada. That means that if you are a temporary resident, such as a visitor, student, or foreign worker, and you apply to extend your temporary resident status before the permit expires, you can legally remain in Canada until a decision is made on the application. During the period that you are waiting for your application to be processed, you are deemed to have implied status or considered to have maintained status in Canada.  If you remain in Canada, this status is recognised by the government of Canada, and you are not regarded as remaining illegally, or seen as someone who has overstayed or run afoul of the immigration rules. However, if you leave Canada, this status will no longer be applicable to you. You will be required to reapply to renter Canada. Since, in your case, your work permit has expired only a month ago, and you applied for perman...

Immigration Corner | Is There An Occupation List For Canada?

FIND OUT MORE  c omplete our  online form    Dear Miss Powell, I   was told that there is no occupation list for people to apply under the Express Entry System, but people keep saying this isn’t true. They say that only certain occupations will qualify. Is there or isn’t there a specific list? Where can I find this list? Which jobs are on this list? Thank you in advance for answering my question. P.W. Dear P.W., The government of Canada does not have a specific list of qualifying occupations for individuals wishing to apply for permanent residence under the Express Entry System. The Express Entry System merely manages applications under the Federal Skilled Worker Programme, the Federal Skilled Trade Programme, Canadian Experienced Class and some Provincial Nominee Programmes. Each programme has its own requirement. FIND OUT MORE  c omplete our  online form    NOC CODES Since 2015, individuals are required to demonstrate ...

A friend left a few years ago and she said she went up as a federal skilled worker. However, most people here are talking about the Express Entry Programme. I’m not sure which programme to use. My wife is a teacher and we want to take our family to Canada but not sure if we should use the Express Entry Programme or the Federal Skilled Worker Programme. Which should we use? Do we need a lawyer to do it for us? We await your response. KF Dear KF There is no Express Entry Programme . The Government of Canada introduced the Express Entry System in 2015, which is an electronic system that manages economic programmes such as Federal Skilled Worker Programme , Federal Skilled Trade Programme, The Canadian Experience Class and some Provincial Nominee Programmes. The system gives the Canadian Government an opportu...

Tradesmen are welcomed to Canada

C omplete our free online form to FIND OUT IF YOU QUALIFY TO COME TO CANADA.   Dear Miss Powell, I’m a hard working tradesman and I keep hearing about people going to work and live in Canada. However, every time I talk to people, they say trades people are not welcome as Canada is only looking for bright people. My aunty keeps complaining that she can’t find a good plumber there and she wishes she could sponsor me as she knows many of her church sister could use the help. If workers are short, how come I keep hearing that people can’t get through? Do they really don’t want a tradesman like me. I have a few CXC and a whole heap of experience. Tell me what to do, please. Tony Dear Tony, Tradesmen are welcomed to come to Canada. There is indeed a shortage of skilled trade workers in Canada. Therefore, the Government of Canada has an immigration category known as the Federal Skilled Trade Programme (FSTP). The FSTP is for applicants with experience in a skilled ...

Canada’s Generous Immigration System

#COMETOCANADA  FIND OUT IF YOU QUALIFY TO COME TO CANADA click here and complete our free assessment form . Dear Miss Powell, I saw where you posted on Facebook that any individual under 35 years with a degree can get to live permanently in Canada. Is Canada really immigrant friendly? Here’s my situation, I am 28 years old and I have a diploma and a degree from Mico. I am a teacher at a high school. I don’t have any family in Canada. Does that mean I qualify to go to Canada? I also have a son and his father isn’t supporting him. Can I take him? Thanks for your time and keep up the good work. RO Dear RO, Canada has a very generous immigration system, whereby individuals who have the education, skills, work experience and other factors, may get permanent residence in Canada in a matter of months. In fact, Canada is the country of choice for most professional and skilled workers worldwide in recent years. Canada faces challenges such as an ageing population and decl...

The best route to migrate to Canada

Dear Ms Powell, My mother lives in Canada and she would like to sponsor me. I am a 25-year-old single Jamaican teacher. Can my mother sponsor me? I have a friend whose mother sponsored her to go to the USA. She says that my mother should be able to sponsor me to go to Canada. Please tell me the best route to go to Canada. Thank you. AH Dear AH, Under the Canadian immigration laws, family sponsorship is generally limited to spouses, common-law partners and dependent children. This is different from the American system. A parent is permitted to sponsor an adult family member in a case where the parent is residing in Canada on her own and has no other living relative or family member residing in Canada. Also, there are some provinces that offer other options for relatives of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to bring their family members, and so I would suggest that you speak to an immigration lawyer to assess your particular situation in detail. Possible Options ...

Immigration Corner | How can I stay in Canada?

Immigration Corner | How can I stay in Canada? :  Dear Ms Powell, I am on long leave from my job in Jamaica and I visited Canada in June. I met a really nice guy and I have been staying with him and helping him in his business - not for money, just as a friend. I'm just helping him to sort his records out. I'm an accountant. I have a Bachelor's Degree and just need a few more courses to get my ACCA certification. I like Canada and would like to stay, but I don't want to run off or be deported. How can I apply to stay? - L.L. Dear L.L., Tread carefully. Usually, when someone visits Canada on a visitor's or temporary resident visa, they are not authorised to work and are required to spend no more than six months in the country. You should pay attention to the timelines so that you don't jeopardise your ability to remain in or return to Canada in the future. Since you are an accountant by profession and have the basic qualifications to be able t...
