Immigration Corner | How to qualify under the Express Entry System

CLICK HERE TO BOOK A ZOOM/TELEPHONE MEETING   Dear Miss Powell, I am a chef, and my husband is a restaurant manager in Jamaica. We are interested in finding work in Canada and living there with our family. Can you let us know how we can move to Canada? I hear about the express entry programme. Can you tell me if I would qualify? – WT Many hotel workers have successfully relocated to Canada using the express entry pathway. Individuals who have experience working in the hotel sector may apply to become permanent residents in Canada, if you are able to satisfy the requirements to enter the express entry pool of eligible candidates. The express entry is not a programme, it is a system used by the government of Canada to manage the existing economic immigration programmes to Canada. That means that to qualify, you would need to be eligible under at least one of the existing economic programmes, such as Federal Skilled Worker (FSW), Federal Skilled Trade, Canadian Experience Class, and s...

Does Age Matter?

Dear Miss Powell, How does the Canadian government choose people to go to Canada? How can I get to Canada quickly? I hear age is a big factor, but I’m not sure why that would be important if I’m healthy and have the money to move. Can you shed some light on this issue for me? I’m the principal of a school and have the money to move with my family. Does my age really matter? What else should I look at? – N.T. Dear N.T., The fastest way to become a permanent resident of Canada is via the Express Entry System. In spite of the pandemic, the Canadian government has still been processing applications. The Express Entry System is utilised by the government to process economic applications for persons who qualify under the Federal Skilled Worker Programme, Federal Skilled Trade Programme, the Canadian Experience Class and some Provincial Nominee Programmes. This is a process whereby each applicant is evaluated based on a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) that awards points or scores to ...

Express Entry Requirements

Click to FIND OUT IF YOU QUALIFY TO COME TO CANADA.   Dear Miss Powell, Thank you for all those useful articles about the Canadian immigration system. They have really helped me with my application. I am now in the express entry pool and my score is 448 and so I expect that I will soon get an invitation to apply for permanent residence. When I applied, they didn’t ask for any documents. I’m trying to get myself ready, but I don’t know what to expect. A friend said that she didn’t get a checklist until late and she almost missed the deadline. Can you please tell me what documents they will need so that I can be prepared? Thank you for all your help. JC Dear JC, I am pleased to hear from readers who let me know that my articles have helped them. The best route to migrate to Canada

Dear Ms Powell, My mother lives in Canada and she would like to sponsor me. I am a 25-year-old single Jamaican teacher. Can my mother sponsor me? I have a friend whose mother sponsored her to go to the USA. She says that my mother should be able to sponsor me to go to Canada. Please tell me the best route to go to Canada. Thank you. AH Dear AH, Under the Canadian immigration laws, family sponsorship is generally limited to spouses, common-law partners and dependent children. This is different from the American system. A parent is permitted to sponsor an adult family member in a case where the parent is residing in Canada on her own and has no other living relative or family member residing in Canada. Also, there are some provinces that offer other options for relatives of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to bring their family members, and so I would suggest that you speak to an immigration lawyer to assess your particular situation in detail. Possible Options ...

Which Programme is Best? ( Express Entry or Study)

Dear Ms Powell, My family and I would like to live in Canada. I spoke to a consultant, who recommended that I go back to study at a college and then apply for permanent residence. I'm concerned about the cost of studies when both my husband and I have a degree and have four years' work experience in our respective fields. I have friends who have got through without having to go to school. Which programme is best - the Federal Skilled Workers (FSW) programme, the Federal Skilled Trades (FST), or the Provincial Nominee Programme (PNP)? Is it really better to apply to study rather than apply straight to get permanent residence in Canada? I'm confused, please help. BF Dear BF, There are several programmes available to professionals to become permanent residents of Canada. The most common options are under the FSW programme, the FST programme, Canadian Experience Class, and the PNP. Individuals who have a minimum of one year work experience in professional occupati...

Immigration Corner | Tell me about these changes to the Canadian Immigration System

I mmigration Corner | Tell me about these changes : Dear Ms Powell, I saw online that professionals can sponsor themselves to become citizens of Canada. I tried a few years ago, but I didn't get through. A friend said that there have been changes to the system, and since I am a manager at a bank and my husband is a mechanic, we stand a good chance. My sister is also interested, and she works at a hotel as a chef. Can you please tell me what the changes are and how we can qualify? - C.J. Dear C.J., The Canadian government has several programmes under which individuals can apply to become permanent residents, and later, citizens. The programmes are monitored by Immigration Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Although family sponsorship is possible for parents, grandparents, children under 18 years, to name a few, many individuals have found that self sponsorship is a viable option. To qualify, individuals need to satisfy the requirements under the Federal Skilled Tr...
