Immigration Corner | Will they take my money?

Immigration Corner | Will they take my money? :  Dear Ms Powell, I recently got an invitation to apply for permanent residence in Canada. When I applied for express entry, I put in my application that I have CDN$20,000 to bring to Canada. This was based on the fact that I plan to sell my house after I get to Canada and check out the place. Now I have to provide proof of the cash and I don't have that amount of money in my bank account! I don't want to sell my assets yet, as I don't know what the future will bring. What if I go there and decide I don't want to live there? Is there a way around this? What will they do with the funds anyway? Will I need to present the funds when I am entering Canada? Can I borrow the money? - A.A. Dear A.A., When you submit an application under the express entry system, you are asked specific questions to determine your eligibility to come to Canada as an economic immigrant and to integrate into the Canadian society. How do I get back to Canada

Dear Ms Powell, I worked in Canada last year on a contract as a skilled labourer. I was hoping that my employer would rehire me this year and I could get a work permit. He however said he can't do so this year as the Canadian government is not allowing him to hire any more temporary foreign workers. He said if I come back he would be happy to hire me, but he is having a hard time and can't help me to get the work permit this year. How can I get to go back? - KE Dear KE, I sympathise with you and your former employer, as many temporary foreign workers (TFW) and employers alike are up in arms about the recent changes under the Canadian Temporary Foreign Worker Programme (TFWP). Most employers are limited to only 20% of their workers being temporary foreign workers especially in the food and accommodation sectors. That is because the government is focusing on reducing unemployment rate and ensuring that persons who are already in Canada can fill these positions.   Apply...

Immigration News on Federal Skilled Trade Workers in Canada

I'm worried about my husband's status - News - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | November 4, 2014 Immigration News on Federal Skilled Trade Workers in Canada and Becoming a Permanent Resident/ Citizen Dear Ms. Powell, My husband is a tradesman and has been working in Canada on a work permit for the past three years.  His work permit will expire next year and I’m worried that they won’t renew it this time.  Is there a way for him to apply for citizenship and file for me and our son? L.L Dear L.L, The application to become a Canadian citizen will need to be done in stages.  You husband would need to first apply to become a permanent resident under the    Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and then he can apply to become a citizen, after satisfying the residency requirements.  The CEC is open to temporary foreign workers and  foreign students who have a minimum of 12 months of full time work (or equivalent part – time work)...

Canada university dreams

Dear Ms Powell, I am  40 years old and would like to attend university in Canada. I also have a 19-year-old son who I would like to take with me. Can you tell me if they would give me a visa for both of us to go? I really want to upgrade myself and set a good example for my son, but I do not want to leave him when I go to study. Can I work when I get there? How do I proceed? - BT Dear BT, First of all, I have to say I am very proud of you. In the modern economy, learning is a lifelong process and Canada has very favourable programmes for adult education. Adults can apply to attend colleges or universities as mature students, and applications to schools by mature students are evaluated differently from applicants who have just finished high school. Many schools in Canada recognise that mature students have life experiences that younger students may not have, such as work experience, experience as a parent or independent learning. Therefore, schools consider this e...

Immigration Corner: Do I qualify for migration to Canada? - News - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | August 26, 2014

Immigration Corner: Do I qualify for migration to Canada? - News - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | August 26, 2014 I have been working on an  ambulance for the past five years. My friends said they heard that I can move to Canada if I sponsor myself to go there. I checked out the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) website, but I'm confused and I'm not sure if I qualify. I was also wondering what the salary range is for paramedics in Canada.  DK Dear DK, In Canada, the field of paramedics, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and emergency medical services is growing in popularity and Citizenship and Immigration Canada ( CIC)  has included paramedic occupations as one of the professions that may apply under the Federal Skilled Worker Programme . That programme is often called locally, the "professional self-sponsorship programme".  Paramedic jobs include workers who administer pre-hospital emergency medical...
