Immigration Corner | Medical reports and medical inadmissibility

FIND OUT IF YOU QUALIFY TO LIVE PERMANENTLY IN CANADA SIGN UP HERE Dear Miss Powell, I got a job offer from an employer in Canada. Can I just go to the nearest doctor to get my medical report for a work permit? Why do they need a medical report? What will they be checking for? What if they find something? I await your response. Thanks. – D.G. Dear D.G., Any individual applying for a temporary or permanent resident visa to Canada could be subject to medical examination by an approved doctor. Medical reports could be requested for applications such as work permit, study permit, some visitor’s visa application and applications for permanent residence. When you apply, you will be advised whether you will need to provide the report. Most applicants are required to do various medical tests and checks with an approved medical practitioner as a part of the application process. The doctor is expected to submit a report to the Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and the repo...

Immigration Corner | Deadline Looming And I Can’t Get Documents

Dear Miss Powell, I read your article recently about the coronavirus, but you didn’t say anything about persons who received an invitation to apply for permanent residence. I only have a few days in which to get my final documents, and I am worried that I will not make the deadline because I am told to stay home. Most places are closed, and I can’t get to pick up the documents. What can I do? Dear A.A., The government of Canada is aware of the effects of COVID-19 worldwide, and although they are continuing with the processing of various immigration applications, service disruptions and restrictions due to COVID-19 may affect the processing times. Special notices have been posted on the government’s website about how they will be handling cases during this time. NOTICES The Department of Immigration Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has indicated that “… no application in progress will be closed or refused due to a lack of documentation or inability to complete...

Medical Inadmissibility

Dear Miss Powell, I completed my studies in Canada and started working in my dream job. However, I was just diagnosed with cancer and my world has turned upside down. I wanted to apply for permanent residence, but my sister said that I may not get through, as they will say I will be putting too much demand on the medical system. What does that mean? Is this the end of my life? What about the valuable contribution I can make to the society, if I recover? What can I do? Should I even bother applying under the Express Entry System? I used up my life savings to come to Canada to study. My sister and other family members are here and so I would want to stay here. I’m very distraught by this and not sure what to do. Please help. O.T. Dear OT, I am very sorry to hear about your medical condition. I know this must be devastating news to you and your family. You did not say what type of cancer, but I want you to know that this is not the end of your life. Many individuals have co...

Seeking A New Life - Provincial Nominee Programme - Canada

Provinces & Territories of Canada Dear Ms Powell, I am a professional in Jamaica. I'm turning 30 next month and need to get out of Jamaica and start a new life. I have been working hard and saving. I've even sold my car and taking the bus, as I want the change badly. I heard you speak in Jamaica and I made detailed notes of what you said I need to do. I did the language exam and I have an educational assessment report. My Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores are not very high, but I heard that if a province nominates me that my score could increase dramatically. How do I go about getting a provincial nominee? It doesn't matter to me which province. Which province has the fewest immigrants? I would apply to that province as I just need a new life for myself and my son, outside of Jamaica. How long would this take? The sooner, the better. - Anonymous   Dear Anonymous, Canada has 10 provinces and three territories that you can explore for opportunities. T...

Canada Immigration: How Do I Get A 'Super Visa'?

Dear Ms Powell, I heard that I can get a Super Visa to go and stay in Canada for up to five years without going back and forth every six months. Can you tell me how to apply for a Super Visa? - B.D.  Dear B.D., Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has a category called the Super Visa that is usually granted for a maximum of five to ten years. Qualified individuals will be authorised to stay longer than the usual six months - from the date of entry, up to a maximum of two years - without paying a fee to apply to extend the time authorised to remain in Canada. However, this visa is only open to parents or grandparents of permanent residents and citizens of Canada, who are able to satisfy certain requirements. The main requirement is that you must be a genuine visitor and do not intend to work without a permit during your visit. You must also leave at the end of the time granted to stay within Canada. If you are a parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permane...

I Got HIV from My Canadian Husband

Dear Miss Powell, I  met a Canadian man about three years ago. We fell in love and got married last year November. I have been faithful to him all these years. After we got married, he told me that he has HIV. He has shown no signs or symptoms and neither have I. However, after he told me that he has HIV, I got tested and realise I, too, have HIV. He is now putting together papers to sponsor me and I'm worried that I will be denied the opportunity to join him in Canada as he says a medical will be necessary. I love my husband and I forgive him for not telling me about this. I just want us to be able to live together. Is it possible for persons who are HIV positive to get a visa to Canada? Will this affect the sponsorship application? If it's possible, what steps would I need to take. I am a professional and I have been in excellent health since I was diagnosed. - Anonymous Dear Anonymous, I am sorry to hear that both you and your husband have contracted HIV. Howeve...

Immigration Corner: Do I qualify for migration to Canada? - News - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | August 26, 2014

Immigration Corner: Do I qualify for migration to Canada? - News - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | August 26, 2014 I have been working on an  ambulance for the past five years. My friends said they heard that I can move to Canada if I sponsor myself to go there. I checked out the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) website, but I'm confused and I'm not sure if I qualify. I was also wondering what the salary range is for paramedics in Canada.  DK Dear DK, In Canada, the field of paramedics, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and emergency medical services is growing in popularity and Citizenship and Immigration Canada ( CIC)  has included paramedic occupations as one of the professions that may apply under the Federal Skilled Worker Programme . That programme is often called locally, the "professional self-sponsorship programme".  Paramedic jobs include workers who administer pre-hospital emergency medical...
