The facts about Canada's express entry - News - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | January 13, 2015

The facts about Canada's express entry - News - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | January 13, 2015 I work at a hotel in Jamaica and all I seem to hear is everyone talking about express entry to Canada. A friend just lost her job, and now she claims that she is leaving her baby father to go to Canada. She said she emailed a consultant who told her about express entry and that anyone can get a green card for Canada. I am confused. Can you give me the basic facts so that I can be better informed and all my friends can stop hyping up about moving to Canada as I can't see why Canada would want anyone who is unemployed, has six children, and no money. Can you please just give me the truth about this new programme? - H.Y. Good day H.Y., Express Entry is not a new programme. It is a system to manage the existing economic immigration programmes to Canada. That means for one to qualify, he would need to be eligible under at least one of the existing economic programmes such as ...

Do I qualify for the skilled worker programme? - News - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | October 7, 2014 Dear Ms Powell, I am 47 years old and have a degree in tourism management. I am currently working in a hotel in Canada. I would like to know if I qualify under the Federal Skilled Worker Programme (FSWP) , Canadian Experience Class, to remain in Canada as I am sure that my employer would say yes to my sponsorship, if I request it. The only thing is that I do not want to get stuck in the job I currently have. How can I apply to stay in Canada permanently? - JJ Dear JJ, Since you are already working in Canada, you stand a good chance of qualifying under one of the programmes to become a permanent resident.  The programmes that you could qualify under are usually based on your current occupation, work experience, age, education and whether or not you can get a valid job offer. Federal Skilled Worker Programme You have indicated that you have a ...

I want to work as a nurse in Canada - News - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | June 3, 2014 Dear Ms Powell, I am  a practical nurse in Jamaica and have worked for more than five years in a hospital. Recently, one of my friends told me she was applying to be a licence practical nurse through the Federal Skilled Worker Programme. I am very interested in doing that. Could you tell me how I can become a licensed practical nurse in Canada? - KR Dear KR, In Canada, nursing is a profession with three regulated nursing groups: registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), and registered psychiatric nurses (RPNs). Many nurses from around the world have found rewarding careers in Canada as licensed practical nurses (LPNs). Approximately 88,200 LPNs are registered in Canada. Nurses who have been trained outside of Canada would need to become certified before being able to practise anywhere in Canada. For international nurses, before you ca...

What should I do about my degrees? - News - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | May 13, 2014 Dear Ms Powell, I have  a master's degree from a Canadian university but my bachelor's degree is from the University of the West Indies (UWI) and I'm planning to apply under the Federal Skilled Worker Programme. Do I need to apply for verification of my degree? Where can I get that report? Can I submit my application without the report, considering that my master's degree is from Canada? - FE Dear FE, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) introduced the need for assessment of all foreign credentials under their revamped Federal Skilled Worker Programme (FSWP). Therefore, if you have received training or education outside of Canada, you will need to provide an educational credential assessment (ECA) report at the same time that you are submitting your application. If you fail to include this with your application, it will be returned. The purpose of the ECA report is to...

I want my son to study in Canada

Immigration corner - I want my son to study in Canada - News - Jamaica Gleaner - Wednesday | November 20, 2013 Dear Ms Powell, I have a brilliant son and believe the education system here is holding him back. I've allowed him to sit his examinations privately and he already has five subjects. He is only in fourth form. Someone recommended that I let him do the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), but I don't want him to study in the United States. Could you, please, give me some information on how I can get my son to study in Canada? - GB Dear GB, Congratulations to you and your son on his achievements. You should speak to your son's principal and teachers if you have concerns about his advancement. I'm not sure if you are thinking that you would like him to complete high school in Canada or Jamaica, then attend university in Canada. In any event, there are some fundamentals that you should think about. Canada is an excellent choice for educational ad...

Submitting a credentials report - News - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | April 30, 2013 Dear Miss Powell, I was  reading up on the federal skilled-worker programme to Canada and notice that they keep mentioning that people with foreign credentials need to provide a credentials report. Can you tell me what that is and where I can get that report? Do I need to have that report before I submit my application? - DB Dear DB, If you have received training or education outside of Canada, you will need to provide an educational credential assessment (ECA) report at the same time, with your federal skilled-worker application to  Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). If you received your training, degrees, diplomas, professional designations, or other certification from a Canadian institution, you will not need to include an EAC report. The purpose of the EAC report is to verify your foreign credentials and assist CIC in evaluating whether your foreign training is...
