Express Entry Requirements

Click to FIND OUT IF YOU QUALIFY TO COME TO CANADA.   Dear Miss Powell, Thank you for all those useful articles about the Canadian immigration system. They have really helped me with my application. I am now in the express entry pool and my score is 448 and so I expect that I will soon get an invitation to apply for permanent residence. When I applied, they didn’t ask for any documents. I’m trying to get myself ready, but I don’t know what to expect. A friend said that she didn’t get a checklist until late and she almost missed the deadline. Can you please tell me what documents they will need so that I can be prepared? Thank you for all your help. JC Dear JC, I am pleased to hear from readers who let me know that my articles have helped them. Congratulations on being accepted into the express entry pool and for having such a high Comprehensive Ranking Score (CRS). Let us keep our fingers crossed that they will select you in the next draw. Manager wants to apply under express entry

Manager and Chef FIND OUT IF YOU QUALIFY TO COME TO CANADA complete our free eligibility assessment. CLICK HERE. Dear Miss Powell, I am a manager at a hotel and I'm fluent in English, Spanish and French. I am interested in applying under the express entry programme to Canada, but I'm not sure if I would qualify. Can you please tell me how I can qualify to live in Canada? Is my occupation on the list that Canada wants? My husband is a chef at a hotel as well. Should we apply separately, or do we have to apply together? Is there a limit on the number of persons that are selected? Do we need a job offer first? We are looking forward to your response. Thanks for your help. - PP Dear PP, The express entry system is a tool utilised by Immigration Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to accept applications under programmes such as Federal Skilled Trade, the Federal Skilled Worker, the Provincial Nominee programme and the Canadian Experienced Class. Provincial Nominee Programmes Canada

Dear Ms Powell, I’m 40 years old and have a sister living in Canada. I stayed in Jamaica as our mother was very ill.   She recently died and now I want to join my sister in Canada.   I am in the express entry pool, but I can’t seem to get selected.   Can you tell me about the provincial nominee programme and how the system works?   I would really like to join my sister.   I am a teacher by profession what options do I have? WP Dear WP, Congratulations for being admitted into the express entry pool.   You have passed the first hurdle towards becoming a permanent resident of Canada.   Having a sister in Canada will give you extra points and improve your chances of being granted a provincial nominee by the province in which your sister lives.   Although there is no strict occupation list under the Express Entry System, you should note that many provinces including British Columbia, Ontario, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and Saskatchew...

Immigration Corner | Can I find work in Canada as an educator/ teacher?

Immigration Corner | Can I find work as an educator? :  Dear Ms Powell, My sister lives in Saskatchewan and says that she would help me to get to live in Canada, but I'm not sure how the system works. She says she sees a lot of job postings for teachers near her home. Would I have to go back to school even though I have a bachelor's degree in education? I have five years' work experience at a prep school in Jamaica. Would I qualify as an early-childhood teacher there and be able to live and work there? - K.E. Dear K.E., There are many opportunities for trained teachers to become permanent residents of Canada. Once you have been granted permanent residence, you will be authorised to live and work anywhere in Canada. Although there is no strict occupation list under the express entry system, you should note that many provinces, including Saskatchewan, have Provincial Nominee Programmes (PNP) that offer permanent residence to individuals who are able to bolst...

Immigration Corner | Offered A Job In Canada

Dear Miss Powell, I got a job offer from a Canadian company and I wanted to update my express entry profile, but I keep getting asked about an 'LMIA'. What is that? How do I get one? I know that if I have a job offer then I would get all the points I need to get permanent residence. Do I really need one? - AR Dear AR, LMIA is an acronym for Labour Market Impact Assessment Report. This was previously called the Labour Market Opinion (LMO). Usually an employer is required to apply to Service Canada for permission to offer a legitimate job to someone who is outside of Canada. The permission is usually granted once the applicant employer can prove to the authorities that there is a genuine shortage of individuals in Canada who can fill the position. After the employer submits the completed application, supporting documents and fees, a report will be prepared to show the impact that hiring a foreign worker has on the current Canadian job market. Service Canada will ex...

Immigration Corner | How Do I Sponsor Myself To Go To Canada?

Dear Ms. Powell, I recently finished my degree at University of the West Indies (UWI) and job prospects here seem very slim. I would like to do the self sponsorship programme to become a citizen of Canada. I have a half sister living there, plus my Dad said he would give me the funds. How do I sponsor myself? Do I need to have a job offer before I apply? How easy is it to get through? How long will it take? Thank you for taking the time to guide me as I see so many advertisements out there that I don't know who to trust and I don't want to get scammed. B.L. Dear B.L. Canada has several immigration programmes under which you could apply to become a permanent resident, provided that you can meet the requirements. The main programmes are the Federal Skilled Worker Programme, Federal Trades Programme, Canadian Experience Class and Provincial Nominee Programme . These programmes are accessible via the Express Entry System. It is a two-step process which involves, f...
