Seeking A New Life - Provincial Nominee Programme - Canada

Provinces & Territories of Canada Dear Ms Powell, I am a professional in Jamaica. I'm turning 30 next month and need to get out of Jamaica and start a new life. I have been working hard and saving. I've even sold my car and taking the bus, as I want the change badly. I heard you speak in Jamaica and I made detailed notes of what you said I need to do. I did the language exam and I have an educational assessment report. My Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores are not very high, but I heard that if a province nominates me that my score could increase dramatically. How do I go about getting a provincial nominee? It doesn't matter to me which province. Which province has the fewest immigrants? I would apply to that province as I just need a new life for myself and my son, outside of Jamaica. How long would this take? The sooner, the better. - Anonymous   Dear Anonymous, Canada has 10 provinces and three territories that you can explore for opportunities. T...

Immigration Corner: Thinking Of Being With My Woman In Canada

Dear Ms Powell, I have been a farmer for the last 10 years and have been seeing a nice Canadian woman for about two years. She visits all the time and stays with me. She said she could help me become a citizen and set up a farm in Canada. However, I don't want any woman to have any control over me, so I want to know if there is a way for me, as a decent farmer man, to go to Canada. My lady is nice but I want to be independent, just in case things don't work out. I have some savings and don't have a chick or child here in Jamaica. I want to explore how I can get to Canada and set up a farm there. What can I do? WN Dear WN, Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), formerly known and Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), has always encouraged self-employed individuals, such as farm managers, cultural and athletic individuals, with relevant experience and qualifications, to apply for and become permanent residents of Canada. Ther...

Immigration Corner: I Want To Move To Canada

Dear Miss Powell, I am a professional and I would like my family to move to Canada. The problem is that I don't have a job offer. I have paid two companies to help me find a job and nothing. I feel like I'm wasting time and money now that the system has changed. Some of my friends did self-sponsorship under the old system and they are gone. I spoke to a consultant who said the only way I can get through is through a job offer or go to school. I have a master's degree, my husband has a bachelor's degree and we have two children and we are already qualified so school is not an option. Can you help us? Life in Jamaica has become unbearable and I want the best for my children. F.M.   Dear F.M., There are a number of ways you can immigrate to Canada without a job offer. Some of the ways may not apply to you, but I'm mentioning them for the benefit of other readers. You can immigrate to Canada under family sponsorship class, refugee and humanitarian programme...

Opportunities in Quebec

Dear Ms Powell, I've been reading your column since 2012 and I must say thank you for shedding so much light on the Canadian immigration system. I notice, however, that most times you say that a programme is not open to persons who want to move to Quebec. Does that mean that there are no skilled-worker programmes for persons who are interested in Quebec? - G.M. Dear G.M., The province of Quebec has several options for citizens of other countries to become permanent residents. This is separate from opportunities available for permanent residence for other provinces under the express entry system. Not only is Quebec a very beautiful province, the government of Quebec is always seeking to implement programmes to attract immigrants who can contribute towards the growth and development of the province. There are many immigration programmes accessible to persons interested in Quebec. For example, there are opportunities for temporary and permanent workers, students, famil...

Quebec needs nurses - News - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | April 8, 2014 Dear Ms Powell, I am  a nurse from Jamaica and I have been working at a hospital for the past seven years. Are there any programmes in Canada for nurses? What immigration programme would suit me? Is it easy to find nursing jobs in Canada? How much would a nurse make? - LC Dear LC, The Canadian Nurses Association has predicted that a staggering 60,000 nurses will be needed by 2022 to deal with labour shortages in Canada. Registered Nurses would be required to fill positions such as: ❏ Nurse practitioners ❏ Nurse researchers ❏ Specialised nurses (burn patient, dialysis, cardiology, nephrology) ❏ Nurse instructors ❏  Psychiatric nurses  ❏ Nurse technicians Nursing is one of the careers that require an individual to have a licence to practise in the province that they choose to live.
