Medical Inadmissibility

Dear Miss Powell, I completed my studies in Canada and started working in my dream job. However, I was just diagnosed with cancer and my world has turned upside down. I wanted to apply for permanent residence, but my sister said that I may not get through, as they will say I will be putting too much demand on the medical system. What does that mean? Is this the end of my life? What about the valuable contribution I can make to the society, if I recover? What can I do? Should I even bother applying under the Express Entry System? I used up my life savings to come to Canada to study. My sister and other family members are here and so I would want to stay here. I’m very distraught by this and not sure what to do. Please help. O.T. Dear OT, I am very sorry to hear about your medical condition. I know this must be devastating news to you and your family. You did not say what type of cancer, but I want you to know that this is not the end of your life. Many individuals have co

Ontario is Still a Good Place for Teachers

Dear Ms Powell, I am a 28-year-old teacher in Jamaica with a diploma and a bachelor’s degree. I want to know if I will qualify to live in Canada. I have a sister living in Ontario, so I am hoping to live and work there. What do I need to work in Ontario as a teacher? What can I do to qualify? Is Ontario a good place for teachers? Or should I apply to another province? Looking forward to hearing from you. SE Dear SE, There is a high demand for teachers in Canada and based on the information you provided, you should be able to qualify to live permanently in Canada under the federal skilled worker programme and could even qualify for an Ontario Provincial Nominee.  In spite of the numerous discussions about new rules in Ontario regarding teacher qualifications and strike, there are job opportunities for teachers who are interested in moving to Ontario.  Click to FIND OUT IF YOU QUALIFY TO COME TO CANADA.   ( click link and sign up ) Your first step would be to get

Opportunities In Canada For People Over 40

Click to FIND OUT IF YOU QUALIFY TO COME TO CANADA.   ( click link and sign up ) Dear Ms Powell, I would like to live permanently in Canada with my family. I have been interested in years, but I was saving and upgrading my skills to be able to make this move. I have the money, education and skills, but I realise that since I’m now over 40, that most of the programmes are not applicable to me. Are there no programmes available to mature individuals? My prime working years are ahead of me. Isn’t that age discrimination? Why does Canada make it so hard for us? We are not coming to be burdens on their economy. We can take care of ourselves. When you are young you don’t have the work experience and money and when you have the work experience and money, you hear that you are too old. What can I do? AD Dear AD, I hear your frustration. However, there are various programmes available for people of all ages with the skill, work experience, finances and other factors to

Dual Intent and Canada Immigration

Click to FIND OUT IF YOU QUALIFY TO COME TO CANADA.   (click link) Dear Ms Powell, I read your articles each week online in the Jamaican Gleaner and I must say that I am impressed with the way you help Jamaicans worldwide through your articles. I am married to a Jamaican and a Canadian citizen. We would like the children’s grandmother to visit us for the Christmas, but we are concerned that the visa will be rejected as we had applied for sponsorship for her. She does not intend to stay until the documents get formalised. Grandpa died this year and we are worried that they think she has stronger ties to Canada than Jamaica and will refuse the visa. Is there a way to reassure them that we do not intend to break the immigration rules and that we just want our Grandma to spend Christmas and even Valentine's Day with us? We do not want her to feel lonely and it’s too expensive for our family to go there for the Christmas. Please help us to figure out the best options for us. T
