I already have a visitor’s visa, and so I was thinking I could just apply when I get there, or at the border. I also heard about a Student Direct Stream, is it best to apply under that? Most foreign nationals are required to apply for a study permit to attend a school in Canada if the course will last more than six months at a designated learning institution in Canada. Courses of general interest, self-improvement, distance learning or courses that you wish to observe without obtaining credits do not require a study permit.   Dear Ms Powell, I   rely on your articles to help me with understanding Canada’s immigration rules. I now have an urgent matter. My son got through to study as an international student for a Canadian school. Due to corona, the government said that he could stay home and study online for up to six months. We were planning for him to go to Canada to finish up then out of the blue, no flights to Canada and more travel restrictions. We are already making a sacrifice for our son to have a better life in Canada, and we were advised that this was the best route. Now with these restrictions, we are wondering if he would qualify to live in Canada if he doesn’t get to finish up his studies and get Canadian work experience. I lost my part-time job, and so I’ve found it difficult to pay my school fees this semester. Can I take some time off from school while I figure out how to get the funds to finish? I applied for a job at a nursing home, but it is a full-time position. If I get the job, can I work and save for a while, then go back to school when I’ve accumulated enough money to finish? Or maybe I can work full-time and study part-time. I really want to finish my studies, but I am completely broke as I’ve used up my savings and I have no support from anyone.   Dear Mrs Powell, I took leave from my job to visit my aunt in Canada just before the lockdown. Shortly afterwards, I got an email from my boss saying that due to COVID-19, she had to lay me off. I was terribly upset but couldn’t leave. My aunt said she would be happy if I could stay longer with her and that I should contact you to see if it is possible to get a work permit or something to stay in Canada.
