Can I sponsor my girlfriend?

Dear Miss Powell, I read your articles all the time. Thank you for them. I have a personal question. I am interested in sponsoring my girlfriend and our son. I am a permanent resident of Canada and I have been travelling back and forth for the past three years to see them. With this COVID situation, I think it is best to get them here. My girlfriend already has her COVID shot and should be getting the next one soon. How do I start the process to get them here? How much money do I need to show that I have? What is the first step that I should take? PR Dear PR, Family is important and since the pandemic, many individuals are looking to sponsor their loved ones to join them here in Canada. The first step is to ensure that all the parties involved are eligible. Immigration Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will evaluate you, the sponsor, and the persons being sponsored to see if you qualify. WHO CAN SPONSOR? I just heard from a friend who is a truck driver that there is a new programme for us to stay in Canada for good. Can you tell me about this programme, as me and my new girlfriend, who is a helper, really want to stay in Canada. My girlfriend also has a sister that she is helping to go to school here, but she said a lawyer told her she is kind of old, so she is worried that she may have to go home soon. Can you please tell us if there is a way for us to sort out our papers to stay permanently? A lot of my friends are really anxious to hear from you. Looking forward to your response in the newspaper. – MM Dear MM You are right about a new pathway for some temporary foreign workers and international students to get permanent resi

How to apply for a Study Permit

Dear Ms Powell, I am interested in applying to go to Canada as an international student. Does everyone need a visa to study in Canada? I already have a visitor’s visa, and so I was thinking I could just apply when I get there, or at the border. I also heard about a Student Direct Stream, is it best to apply under that? Can you please tell me how to apply? What is the exact amount that I need to apply? Thank you for your time. – A.B. Dear A.B., Canada is still accepting applications for study permit worldwide. Most foreign nationals are required to apply for a study permit to attend a school in Canada if the course will last more than six months at a designated learning institution in Canada. Courses of general interest, self-improvement, distance learning or courses that you wish to observe without obtaining credits do not require a study permit. Since the pandemic, many of the schools have changed their curriculum, and so short courses may be offered online only. Individuals are bei
