Submitting a credentials report - News - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | April 30, 2013

Dear Miss Powell,
I was reading up on the federal skilled-worker programme to Canada and notice that they keep mentioning that people with foreign credentials need to provide a credentials report. Can you tell me what that is and where I can get that report? Do I need to have that report before I submit my application?
- DB
Dear DB,
If you have received training or education outside of Canada, you will need to provide an educational credential assessment (ECA) report at the same time, with your federal skilled-worker application to  Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC).
If you received your training, degrees, diplomas, professional designations, or other certification from a Canadian institution, you will not need to include an EAC report.
The purpose of the EAC report is to verify your foreign credentials and assist CIC in evaluating whether your foreign training is equivalent to a completed Canadian credential. This will also be a useful tool for when you are making applications to other Canadian institutions or to prospective Canadian employers.
Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney said: "By having their foreign education credentials assessed before their arrival to Canada, foreign skilled workers  will have a better sense of how their credentials fit into the Canadian labour market and will be able to contribute their full skill set to the economy more quickly. This proposal is part of a broader package of transformational changes that will make Canada's immigration policies work better for the Canadian economy."
The EAC report may be obtained from any of the following CIC approved organisations:
Comparative Education Service - University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies
International Credential Assessment Service of Canada (ICAS)
World Education Services
Medical Council of Canada
If you are a physician, you should submit your documents directly to the Medical Council of Canada for evaluation.
OTHER DOCUMENTS
To have your completed academic credential assessed for the federal skilled-worker programme, you will need to submit documents such as original transcripts, copies of your certificates/ degrees/diploma, and a copy of your thesis (PhD). The cost ranges from CDN$180 -$300 per report. Check the individual organisation's website for information about additional cost and processing time.
Remember, your report must be included with your application. The reports are usually valid for five years.
Best of luck!

Immigration Corner | What is an Authorisation to Return to Canada? : Dear Miss Powell, I used to live in Canada, but I was sent home. My cousin is getting married and I have an invitation to attend the wedding. Can I reapply for a visitor’s visa? What are the chances of my application being successful? Thank you Dear WW, A foreign national who has contravened the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) and its regulations can be the subject of a removal order from Canada and may need to apply for an Authorization to Return to Canada (ARC), and a Temporary Resident (visitor’s) visa. The success of your application depends on the reason that you were “sent home”, the type of removal order that was issued against you, the length of time that has passed, as well as your current social and economic situation. At the time of your departure from Canada, did you notify the Canadian Border Services Agency? Did they give you a letter confirming your departure? You should have received

Immigration Corner | Married to a Canadian, will they harass me? : Dear Miss Powell, I am married to a Canadian citizen. Before we were married, I had my visitor’s visa, so I was going back and forth, and he did the same. That works out good for both of us as we are very busy with our work, plus my husband says he... The immigration officer will not “harass” you because you are now married. However, you should expect to provide explanations about the reason for your visit and whether you are considering living or working in Canada. You should be honest with them as you could be barred from Canada for approximately five years for misrepresentation and have difficulties with future applications.

Thank you. CW Dear CW, There are various programmes available for individuals and couples who are interested in living and working in Canada. The key is to apply for the correct programme based on your work experience, education, and other credentials.
