New immigration programmes - News - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | April 29, 2014 Dear Ms Powell, After reading  some of your past articles, I think I would fall under the Federal  Skilled  Worker  category. I remember seeing an article where you noted that Citizenship and Immigration Canada(CIC) would announce new programmes at the end of April, this year. Do you have any information about that? - WK Dear WK, Many prospective  immigrants  have been eagerly waiting for CIC to announce their new programmes for 2014 - 2015. I'm pleased to say that we now have a list of eligible occupations under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW), Federal Skilled Trade Program (FST) and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) category effective May 1, 2014. I'm very excited about the new changes, as more people can qualify to make Canada their home. CIC will be accepting more applications than before. There is still a cap on the number of applications t...

New Canadian immigration programmes - News - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | April 15, 2014 Dear Ms Powell, I was  told by a friend that the  Canadian Immigration office has released some new programmes this year. I can't seem to find the information on any websites. Can you tell me what these programmes are? - RM Dear RM, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) changes its immigration programmes on an annual basis and, therefore, we need to monitor the updates regularly. However, as noted last week, the province of Quebec has announced a number of new measures under the skilled worker, investor and entrepreneur programmes. These new rules came into effect on April 1, 2014, and will run until March 31, 2015. Also, the province of Nova Scotia has some new programmes available this year. Quebec ...

Are there any programmes in Canada for nurses? What immigration programme would suit me? Is it easy to find nursing jobs in Canada? How much would a nurse make? - LC Dear LC, The Canadian Nurses Association has predicted that a staggering 60,000 nurses will be needed by 2022 to deal with labour shortages in Canada. Registered Nurses would be required to fill positions such as: ❏ Nurse practitioners ❏ Nurse researchers ❏ Specialised nurses (burn patient, dialysis, cardiology, nephrology) ❏ Nurse instructors ❏  Psychiatric nurses  ❏ Nurse technicians Nursing is one of the careers that require an individual to have a licence to practise in the province that they choose to live. There is no national registration; therefore, you must be registered by the re...

Must I file taxes if I am in Jamaica? - News - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | April 1, 2014 Dear Ms Powell, I  got  my permanent resident card last year and I landed last February, but I had to come back to Jamaica to finalize  my move. I know it's tax season and I was told that some tax documents were delivered to my house in Canada. Do I need to file tax returns considering that I have been out of the country most of the year? My friend says that I could get benefits if I file. What are the benefits of filing tax returns? Can I file from Jamaica? Could you give me some advice on how to file my tax for the first time? Thanks. - M.G. Dear M.G., The day you land in Canada as a permanent resident, you have established residential ties with Canada and, therefore, have the rights, benefits, and obligations as a permanent resident. As a permanent resident, you are entitled to receive benefits such as health-care coverage; childcare allowances; be able to live, ...
