How do I find a job in Canada? - Lead Stories - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | January 29, 2013 Dear Miss Powell, I would like to get a job in Canada, and one of my friends said that it would be best to contact you, a well-known lawyer, to help me instead of using the agencies here. I really don't trust those agencies as I hear so many horror stories. Can you help me to find a job and help me with my immigration papers? - NB Dear NB, Lawyers are not recruitment agencies, so we do not find jobs for individuals. However, from time to time, we do assist our business clients with the preparation of job offers and contracts of employment. We also act as representatives for individuals and guide them through the immigration process.  My office is here to help people who are desirous of using a representative who has the experience of dealing with the immigration process. Some people may want to have the reassurance that their documentation is being prepared and monitored by

Would a welder qualify for residency? - Lead Stories - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | January 22, 2013 Dear Ms Powell, I am  a welder and I have my own little thing going on here in Jamaica. I know I'm no big-time professional, but I read last week where you said that there are several other categories that people could fall under. Can you tell me if as a welder I could possibly qualify to move to Canada? - J.G Dear J.G. Citizenship and Immigration Canada  has  recognized  that there is a shortage of certain skilled trade personnel to serve the Canadian society and so they have expanded the immigration programme to include trades persons with certain critical skills. Under the new Federal Skills Trades Program, they are looking for qualified skilled persons such as: 1. Welders, 2. Logging machinery operators, 3. Plumbers, 4. Carpenters, 5. Telecommunications installation and repair workers, 6. Heavy duty equipment mechanics, 7. Industrial mechanics, 8. Elevator mechanics, 9. Crane

Is Canada now accepting applications under the skilled-workers' programme? - News - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | January 15, 2013 Dear Ms Powell, I am a professional in Jamaica and I am desirous of moving to Canada. Some time ago, you mentioned that the Federal Skill Program was "frozen" and that  Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) is no longer accepting applications. Do you know when this will reopen? How do I know if I qualify to immigrateas a professional? B.A. Dear B.A. CIC announced recently that it will start accepting general applications under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) in May 2013, and qualified persons will be able to submit their applications for consideration. It is expected that the new system will result in a reduction of the time that it takes to process applications. You should note that there will be a limit to the number of applications that will be accepted, and so applications will be processed on a first-come-first-

I want the freedom to travel - News - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | January 8, 2013

I want the freedom to travel - News - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | January 8, 2013 Dear Miss Powell, I notice  that the so called 'First World' countries are making it harder and harder for Jamaicans to visit their country. I am doing well here in Jamaica, so I have no desire to move permanently from my beautiful country. I just want the freedom to travel and visit different countries when I find time for a vacation. I was planning to apply for Canadian visitor's visa  for my wife and I, so I can take her to Niagara Falls for our 25th wedding anniversary. My main concern is that I heard they are now insisting that we make our applications personally to the Canadian Embassy and they want fingerprints. Is this so? Does that mean that we will have to pay more on top of the already exorbitant price for a simple visitor's visa? I really think this this visa is a money-making business for these countries. Does that mean I can't send my application through the travel
